Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve (SBWR) was gazetted as a nature reserve in Jan 2002. This event is a landmark in the history of nature conservation in Singapore as Sungei Buloh is one of the two new Nature Reserves to be gazetted since our independence. In 2002, SBWR was also recognized as a site of international importance for migratory birds as it was accepted as one of the member countries of the East Asian Australasian Shorebird Partnership, and in 2003, Sungei Buloh became Singapore’s first ASEAN Heritage Park.
From September to March every year, you can view migratory birds such as plovers, sandpipers and egrets from as far as Siberia, China, Japan and South Korea as they make their annual pilgrimage to the Reserve, to escape the northern winter. Apart from the birds, the mangrove ecosystem provides yet another interesting aspects of the Reserve. The peculiar root formations of the mangroves, with some twisting and turning while
others protrude out of the soft mud, are a curious sight. This dynamic ecosystem supports a wide variety of wildlife that you can enjoy at close range, including the all time favourites such as the mudskippers, crabs and monitor lizards.
