National Geographic Channel Opens the World Cities Summit
2010 Plenary Sessions

          National Geographic Channel will present the opening video at the Opening Plenary of the second World Cities Summit (WCS) on Tuesday, 29 June 2010.

2 WCS 2010 brings together many distinguished policy makers, industry experts, and civil society leaders to confer on issues relating to leadership and governance, the building of sustainable and eco-friendly cities, and the fostering of harmonious and sustainable communities. Aptly titled "Sustainable Cities: Leadership and Governance", the Opening Plenary discusses innovative and effective strategies and options for policymakers, across fields such as urban and industrial planning, affordable housing, efficient public transport, integrated water management, and sound environmental management.

3 Keynote speakers include leading international luminaries such as Mrs Anna Tibaijuka, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director, UN-HABITAT, Dr Noeleen Heyzer, Under-Secretary-General of the UN and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), Mr Huang Qifan, Mayor of Chongqing, China, and Mr Amitabh Kant, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation.

4 National Geographic Channel's opening visual presentation will focus on the core components of liveable cities such as, good governance, competitive economy, master planning, quality of life, and environment sustainability. Covering cities with enviable practices in urban development such as Bilbao, Mumbai, Singapore, and Shanghai, the video will illustrate the growing challenges that confront urban cities across the world today and the innovative solutions which have been used to overcome these obstacles.

"Our partnership with World Cities Summit 2010 to showcase the state of the world's urban cities symbolizes the immense synergy in educating and engaging people the world over to creating a viable environment now and for generations to come."

6 Mr Andrew Tan, Chairman of WCS 2010 said, "This partnership with National Geographic Channel is one of many that the World Cities Summit hopes to establish with global industry partners. We believe the video will impress upon all delegates that they can make a difference." Mr Tan is also the Director of the Centre for Liveable Cities, one of the co-organisers of the WCS, and concurrently the CEO of Singapore's National Environment Agency.

7 The WCS Opening Plenary session is being held jointly with the Singapore International Water Week, which is co-located with the World Cities Summit.
